• The word Christmas has its roots in Old English. Cristes Maesse was the term used to describe the church service that commemorated the birth of Christ—Christ's Mass.
• It is speculated that Christmas may be celebrated on December 25 because it follows nine months after the Festival of the Annunciation (March 25), which was the date commemorated for celebrating Gabriel’s announcement to Mary of her pregnancy.
• The First Sunday in Advent is “New Year’s Day” in the church calendar—offering a fresh start for life and faith and worship.
